Ellis Island, known to most immigrants as the 'Island of Hope' became the entry point for millions of immigrants into the United States beginning in 1892. Immigration was and continues to be so vital to our nation's rich history and success. Most immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s, came to the United States in search of a better life, some to escape religious persecution, and others.
The first place they arrived at was Ellis Island, a small island in New York harbour, USA. The people passed through a huge immigration centre and were given health checks before being allowed to enter the country. One of the first things that people saw on arrival on Ellis Island was the Statue of Liberty, which had stood in the harbour since 1886. More than a third of all Americans can trace.
