The Character of Prospero in The Tempest The presence of Prospero is felt continuously in The Tempest, even in those scenes in which he does not appear personally. He is the manipulator of the action of the play, and occupies the center of the stage very markedly, especially if one compares his position with that of the central characters of, say, most of Shakespeare's history plays.
The relationship between Prospero and Ariel is one of a master and a servant. In other words, a master is someone who controls and executes commands to a servant and a servant is someone who serves and obeys commands of a master.
Prospero, the characters on the shipwreck, and Caliban, and Ariel spend most of the play reacting to this event. Caliban’s character represents a struggle to regain his power, while Ariel has a particular influence on the subsequent plot that relates to the themes of time and the supernatural.
Caliban is the only native of the island that we meet. It is unclear whether he is a man or a monster and as such this character has been performed in many different ways over time.
Shakespeare died at the age of 52 which was over the life expectancy at the time, 42 meaning he was writing Prospero character in the viewpoint of old man therefore clearly understanding the reality of what Prospero is going through as he himself was an elderly man.
